Creating an iPhone time lapse movie of pine cones closing and opening

I put some pine cones in water to watch them close up. It took about 2 hours.

I had to put my tripod in the sink to get a low angle shot. I used the Glif tripod adapter.

I put the iPhone in airplane mode so it wouldn't vibrate.

I put the pine cones under a warm light to try to get them to open. They barely budged after 4 hours. I tried another 4.5 hour time lapse the next morning (about 12 hours after being out of the water).

It's a lot easier to get them to close. Getting them to open up again takes a long time.

I completely agree! The footage is breathtaking, and it makes me wish I had a better camera, more experience, and - wait a minute... Knate Myers isn't an astronaut on the ISS. As Knate states in the video credits:

"Every frame in this video is a photograph taken from the International Space Station. All credit goes to the crews on board the ISS. I removed noise and edited some shots in photoshop. Compiled and arranged in Sony Vegas."

So what's the deal? Can I take epic footage from the International Space Station, add some music, and post it on my own Vimeo channel? According to NASA: Absolutely!

Heck, I can even snag some images to use on my site for free (like the ones below) as long as I say Images courtesy of the Image Science & Analysis Laboratory, NASA Johnson Space Center and add a link to http://eol.jsc.nasa.gov/

Boom! Free media. Nothing against Knate Myers, but I'm a lot less impressed. I might even make my own ISS video and post it online for everyone to gawk at! No fancy equipment needed!

Time lapse clouds and jet streams on iPhone

Not sure if these are altocumulus or cirrocumulus clouds, but they're mixed in with jet streams. I didn't realize jet trails moved intact horizontally, I figured they would dissipate before being carried by the wind as a whole unit. See, I learned something!

Ice cube melting time lapse iPhone video

More fun with time lapse! Since I couldn't find any wet paint to film, I figured watching ice melt was the next best thing (ha ha ha).

Time lapse star motion on Canon PowerShot A3100 IS

I decided to turn several of the sequence shots I used to make my stacked star trail photos into a Vimeo movie showing the motion through the sky. It's a little choppy, and it looks better when I crank the speed up a bit - however, if I ran it any faster the video would become too short - so it's a little slow.

Hey, not bad for a first attempt with a dinky point-and-shoot! Now I just need to develop the patients to do longer exposures to create even longer videos.

Another washed-out time lapse sunrise on iPhone

So this is my second attempt at recording a time lapse sunrise on my iPhone, and it's the second time the light totally white washed the entire video. The results are similar to my first attempt. At least I used the auto-start timer so I didn't lose any sleep over it!

Using my trusted binder clip screwed to a tripod technique, I tried my hand at time lapsing something other than the sky out my bedroom window.



The tree was moving around more than I would have liked, and the sun went behind some clouds, but otherwise I was pleased with the neat angle and HD quality of the video.

I'm amazed what this little phone can do! I took this time lapse video over a 2 hour period through my bedroom window. I tried to change the angle so I wouldn't just be filming the exact same scene as all my other time lapse videos - which resulted in a dark spot on the side from the windowsill.



In the bottom left, you'll notice a jet stream streak by almost like a bottle rocket right when the music pauses. (P.S. this music is hilarious and was free to add using YouTube's enhancement feature). When the music stops, the moon slowly rises above the tree.

This was filmed on Thursday, May 3, 2012 between 6:30pm-8:30pm. Tonight (May 5) there is going to be a "supermoon" but it's cloudy and rainy here in Bowling Green. I'm still pleased that you can see any detail on the moon at all considering on my other camera it just looks like a glowing white circle.

These overcast skies are getting annoying! Oh well, the least I can do is make mediocre time lapse films on my iPhone. Meh.

Well it looks like my plans for star circles have been thwarted by some heavy stratus clouds. For a second there I thought things were clearing up, I even saw a bit of sun on the tree out my window when I started this time lapse shot.

On the plus side, I now have some great naturally fading footage possibly for the end of a longer montage down the road. I also discovered how to add free audio clips to my YouTube files - gotta love free stuff!

Time lapse video on iPhone, still no tripod

My partner told me if I could find a $10 tripod I could go ahead and get it. For now, I'm making do with what I already have available around the apartment. Here is my first attempt at a time lapse video using the iPhone app TimeLapse:

Yeah, I shot through a screen with the iPhone sitting on top of a roll of tape. Not great!

I found this little stand laying around, I think it's used to prop your phone up on a desk to watch movies or videos. Spinning it around, it's a pretty good angle to look up and over the windowsill and to the sky.

I'm recording through the bedroom window because there's no screen in the way. Today is just a boring gray overcast day, but maybe an hour of time lapse will show me something interesting happening in the clouds that I can't see just by looking out the window.

I'm also using the focus lock in the TimeLapse app so the image doesn't jump in and out trying to re-focus before each exposure. We'll see what happens!

It looks like I found a great window perch to try some more videos later. I'm pleased that the clouds were more dynamic than I anticipated on this gray overcast day, but I'm not happy about the rain!
